Storytelling Art: The Importance Of Editing And Self-Editing

My first novella, City of Kaiju, is out today! Available through Amazon and Books2Read. You can see a preview of the very first chapter here. Help support a fresh new author with a fantastic read this winter season.

Storytelling Art is a series about the kinds of storytelling methods I use and what kinds of material I use to make them. I also talk about my life as an author and what goes into my day to day life. Today, we’re talking about the importance of editing and self-editing.

So, about a week ago, there was a twitter post about some “advice” if you’d like to call it that. In her original tweet she stated that “Anyone who relies on self-publishing and doesn’t consult an editor is a fool” according to some anonymous weirdo. To start, that’s awfully harsh. I understand not everyone can afford to edit, and some do feel confident enough in their editing skills to solicit feedback for free, but considering that anyone who doesn’t is doing it wrong seems to be going too far. Today, we’re doing something different. Instead of doing a typical novel review at the beginning of the month, we’re changing things up to make things easier on me. To start, every three months, starting today will be a novella review, either a small novella or one from a magazine. Novel reviews will be in between and short stories, of course, will be every Friday otherwise. This puts less strain on me and it means I can focus on other things at the same time. So now, let’s get into our first novella (a reprint, really, but a good starting point)

Today’s Novella is All The Flavors: A Tale of Guan Yu, the Chinese God of War, in America by Ken Liu. You can find it here. This is from Lightspeed, but you’d have to buy the issue to read for yourself. The original version is here.

Let’s get started, shall we? Continue reading “All The Flavors: A Tale of Guan Yu, The Chinese God of War, In America”

Hello, everyone. I wanted to bring up a few plans for my website, blog, and author career as we approach 2019. This year saw the release of two new works. My Cat Is A Monster, and Do Not Stare Into The Eyes of a Kitsune, both short stories you can read now. In February, I’ll launch the City Of Kaiju, my first novella and I shall do my darnedest to get Legends of Eifalia to an agent and push that out as soon as possible, hopefully by March’s #PitMad event.

But I wanted to primarily discuss the website and what I plan to do with it over the next year. I’ll have a proper goals post for New Years but I wanted to talk about the now. The main focus will be the blog updates. So I’m gonna run through a few things so you have an idea of what I have planned.
