Today, we’re doing something different. Instead of doing a typical novel review at the beginning of the month, we’re changing things up to make things easier on me. To start, every three months, starting today will be a novella review, either a small novella or one from a magazine. Novel reviews will be in between and short stories, of course, will be every Friday otherwise. This puts less strain on me and it means I can focus on other things at the same time. So now, let’s get into our first novella (a reprint, really, but a good starting point)

Today’s Novella is All The Flavors: A Tale of Guan Yu, the Chinese God of War, in America by Ken Liu. You can find it here. This is from Lightspeed, but you’d have to buy the issue to read for yourself. The original version is here.

Let’s get started, shall we? Continue reading “All The Flavors: A Tale of Guan Yu, The Chinese God of War, In America”

Fiction Friday: Remaking History

My first novella, City of Kaiju, is available for pre-order. Available through Amazon and Books2Read. You can see a preview of the very first chapter here. Check it out when it launches, February 12th, 2019.

Fiction Friday is a series where I talk about what I’ve been reading. Short Stories (and sometimes Novellas) are featured as in-between posts and the first Friday of the month will feature a new novel review. Today, I review Remaking History by Kim Stanley Robinson.

History is an interesting thing. Preservation and accuracy must be key to understanding who we are and where we came from. But some have other ideas, twisting historical facts into their own vision. Eventually, the ability to distinguish truth from fiction become dulled, and common falsehoods become historical facts themselves.

No, I’m not talking about Trump and his Fake News brigade. I’m talking about today’s story. We’re talking about Remaking History by Kim Stanley Robinson, as featured in Lightspeed Magazine, originally in Other Edens II. You can find it here. This is a story focused on making movies on a lunar base. It’s fun and true to Hollywood as you think, so let’s see what this is about. Continue reading “Fiction Friday: Remaking History”

Fiction Friday: Talk To Your Children about Two-Tongued Jeremy

My first novel, City of Kaiju, is available for pre-order TODAY. Available through Amazon and Books2Read. You can see a preview of the very first chapter here. Releasing on February 12th, 2019.

Ever have that toy that looked innocent enough, but turned out super creepy, as if it wanted to kill you? Well, that’s what this story reminded me of, only in mobile app form.

Today’s story is a bit intense, but I felt it was a very masterfully built tale of bullying, harassment, and AI monitor lizards. Today, we’re reading Talk to Your Children about Two-Tongued Jeremy by Theodore McCombs, as featured in Lightspeed Magazine. You can find it here. Imagine something like ABC Mouse or something similar, only it chastised you for being behind, screwing up, all to the point of merciless cyber-bullying.

Oh, and the thing hacks into your smartphone like Skynet and Facebook on steroids. Yikes.

Well, let’s begin.

Today’s short story is Big Boss Bitch by Adrienne Celt, as featured in Lightspeed Magazine. You can find it here. This story is about a no-nonsense woman who becomes president, all while politicians use it as an excuse to replace her with an android of their own. So let’s see how this goes. Back to business. Video game business. Today’s short story is Abandonware, by Genevieve Valentine, as featured in Lightspeed Magazine. You can find it here.

Before we go on to the story itself, this came from Lightspeed, which is celebrating the wonderful landmark of 100 issues. That’s a lot for a short fiction magazine, and most don’t even go that far. There are still magazines from the 60s that are still active today, but I have to celebrate since I love this magazine a lot. Happy 100th Issue. Here’s to a hundred more)

Now then, let’s begin. Continue reading “Fiction Friday: Abandonware”

Fiction Friday: Greetings Humanity! Welcome To Your Choice of Species!

I love transformation. The idea of being something other than a human is a favorite idea of mine. Also, I love opportunities to be something else, whether through science, magic or in between. So this story is kind of about that, but it makes you realize that even life in outer space isn’t fair.

Today’s short story is “Greetings Humanity! Welcome To Your Choice of Species!” by Adam Troy-Castro, as featured in Lightspeed Magazine. You can find it here. This isn’t so much a story as it is a fun little idea, more of a what if. But it’s an amusing one, so let’s dive into it.
