Fiction Friday is a series where I talk about what I’ve been reading. Short Stories (and sometimes Novellas) are featured as in-between posts and the first Friday of the month will feature a new novel review. Today, I review Dem Bones by Lavie Tidhar.

I’ve talked about my support for Strange Horizons and their amazing and diverse stories, but I don’t believe I reviewed anything from them before. Usually, because their stories tend to be creepy and dark, and a bit adult for my audience. I have featured stories like that before, so I guess, what harm is there?

Today’s short story is Dem Bones, by Lavie Tidhar. You can find it here. Speaking of creepy, how about a little post-apocalypse with a bit of dystopia and biblical nods to go with it. Anyway, let’s get to it. Continue reading “Fiction Friday: Dem Bones”

Storytelling Art: The Importance Of Editing And Self-Editing

My first novella, City of Kaiju, is out today! Available through Amazon and Books2Read. You can see a preview of the very first chapter here. Help support a fresh new author with a fantastic read this winter season.

Storytelling Art is a series about the kinds of storytelling methods I use and what kinds of material I use to make them. I also talk about my life as an author and what goes into my day to day life. Today, we’re talking about the importance of editing and self-editing.

So, about a week ago, there was a twitter post about some “advice” if you’d like to call it that. In her original tweet she stated that “Anyone who relies on self-publishing and doesn’t consult an editor is a fool” according to some anonymous weirdo. To start, that’s awfully harsh. I understand not everyone can afford to edit, and some do feel confident enough in their editing skills to solicit feedback for free, but considering that anyone who doesn’t is doing it wrong seems to be going too far. Beneath Ceaseless Skies Issue #220 by [Saab, Sara, Hunt, Kurt]

War. Genocide. These things tend to be unlikely bedfellows in our world. But what happens after that? When all is said and done, when the bodies pile up? When dealing with fantasy war, then punishment unlike anything possible would suffice.

Today’s short story is a reprint, Suddenwall, by Sara Saab, originally in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and featured in PodCastle. You can find it here. Dealing with war, it can get pretty dark, but the aftermath and the chaos has always been a topic among war stories that often goes unsaid. Heroes come and go, but those who have to be in the middle of that. This story focuses on the darker side of that, so let’s get into it. Continue reading “Fiction Friday: Suddenwall”

Legacy of Pandora: Shan Takhu Legacy: Book One by [Craig, Eric Michael]

Ever feel like when you read a book, you get a good story, but at the same time, you feel a bit…strange. As if something isn’t quite there, but it’s good enough so you let it pass. Well, that’s how I feel with this book.

Today’s novel review is Legacy of Pandora by Eric Michael Craig. You can find it here. This is a hard sci-fi story, meaning it relies on logic and fact instead of making things up for entertainment. It seems believable enough, but let’s see how well this holds up.
